How subscriptions work

Fika allows writers to offer paid subscriptions to their readers. You can follow any publication for free, and some writers also offer paid tiers that unlock exclusive content.

Content on Fika has three levels of visibility:

  • Public: Visible to anyone, with no account or subscription required.

  • Subscribers only: Visible to anyone who follows the publication, including free followers. You simply need to follow the publication to access this content.

  • Paid tiers: Reserved for readers subscribed to a specific paid tier. Writers can create one or more paid tiers, each potentially unlocking different content.

When you come across a post you don’t have access to, you’ll see a partial preview (usually the beginning of the post) followed by a prompt to subscribe or upgrade. The full content becomes available once you’re subscribed to the required plan.

Similarly, if a writer sends a paid post by email to subscribers who are not on the required tier, you’ll receive a shortened preview with a link to upgrade and read the full post.

Subscription Tiers

Each writer sets up their own subscription tiers. A tier includes:

  • A name (chosen by the writer, for example “Supporter” or “Premium”)

  • A description explaining what’s included

  • A price set by the writer

Prices start at €5 per month and are determined individually by each writer. Some writers offer a single paid tier, while others may offer multiple tiers at different price points, each unlocking different content or subscriber benefits.
